Today we shot ice cream sundaes! Our wonderful hostesses Kyle and Sarah brought in fake ice cream, sprinkles, glasses, bananas, and various sauces. There were two sets possible, a studio set and a natural light set. In both of the sets, I experimented with switching the backdrop cloth. Paige and I moved the items around to create a more playful and dynamic shot. This main shot that I chose is a detail shot featuring the sprinkles with a short depth of field. I chose to make it such a short depth of field because the eye doesn’t need to see each sprinkle clearly, and it makes the photo have a focal point. The blurred sprinkles also provide rest for the viewer’s eyes. I somewhat struggled with this shoot because the ice cream concoction looked glowy in the daylight and melty in the studio light. I was drawn to the color of the sprinkles and different cones so I focused on those mostly.

The top left photo shows me trying to capture Paige pouring sprinkles back into the bowl. I had a hard time finding the settings to capture this but eventually found a setting that kind of worked. The composition just didn’t work out. The next picture to the right is an example of the ice cream looking glowy and strange. I couldn’t seem to get the two cones to work together well, so this set of shots were not chosen. The shot to the very right seemed too random and I didn’t like the foreshortening in the pink cone. The bottom shot wasn’t chosen because I didn’t think the background complimented the foreground well enough.

  1. Hey Kaitlin, wow, I love all the color in your hero shot! I see this printed really big on canvas and stretched on a frame as abstract art. The only thing I would change is to crop out the blurry part at the bottom of the image. That part is hard to look at and distracting to the eye, taking emphasis off the vibrant mix of colors that are in clear focus.
    Nice work again!
